Confederation of Indian Industry and Science & Engineering Research Board, Government of India jointly offer 100 prime minister fellowships each year under the PPP mode. Duration of the fellowships will be a maximum of four years leading to awarding of PhD degree. The Fellowship amount will be up to Rs. 6,00,000/- per annum maximum per candidate. 50% of which will be provided by government and balance 50% by a sponsoring industry. The deadline for submission of application is 30 November 2013.

Study Subject (s): Areas of research should be in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture or Medicine.
Course Level: Fellowships are available for pursuing PhD research program in any recognised Indian University or Institution or Research Laboratory in India.

Eligibility:
-One doctoral fellow and one industry will apply jointly. The application has to be filled by the doctoral fellow
-Doctoral fellow should be have registered for full-time PhD program in the academic year in 2013-14 in any recognised Indian University or Institution or Research Laboratory in India -Doctoral fellow should obtain ‘No Objection’ from his/her Institution before applying
-Doctoral fellow should have identified (before applying) an industry partner/co-applicant who should be ready to support the research project financially and also lend technical and intellectual support
-Areas of research should be in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture or Medicine
-The topic of research should have practical relevance and industrial application
-The candidate and the proposed research topic should qualify on criteria of excellence and relevance and be of technical and scientific merit
-The selected doctoral fellow should be willing to work with / in industry as and when required by the industry partner during the project period
-The research duration should not be more than four years leading to award of PhD degree to the doctoral fellow

Scholarship Description: Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) for human resource capacity building for industrial R&D has been recognised as one of the main deliverables by a Sub-committee of Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry. One of the key recommendations that emerged from the Private Sector is to design, develop and implement a Doctoral Research Scheme under PPP for enhancing trust level in academia, research outfits and industry. The Hon’ble Prime Minister, in his speech as General President of the Indian Science Congress Association, announced a special scheme for 100 ‘Doctoral Research Fellowships’ every year during the Inception Ceremony in June 2012 in Kolkata. On 8 November 2012, Mr. S Jaipal Reddy, Hon’ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, launched the Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research, at ‘AICTE-CII University-Industry Congress & 4th Global Higher Education Summit’ held at Hotel Lalit in New Delhi. This scheme, being implemented jointly by Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), is launched under the PPP mode.
Number of award (s): Up to 100 research projects would be supported against the present call and the Fellowship will be paid from financial year 2014-15.
Duration of award(s): Duration of the Fellowships will be a maximum of four years leading with awarding of PhD degree.
What does it cover? The scheme is for supporting aspiring PhD scholars with double scholarship (up to Rs. 6 lakh per annum), 50% of which will be provided by government and balance 50% by a sponsoring industry, for doing research for four years and the research fellow will receive PhD degree by doing this industrial research.
Selection Criteria:
-The project should be innovative and of high scientific merit; with discrete R&D as opposed to exploratory investigation
-The proposed research should have a high potential to translate into a business opportunity and commercialization
-High credibility, capacity of doctoral fellow and the institution
-High degree of business interest, involvement and collaboration of industry
Notification: Results will be announced by January/February, 2014.
